Makeup Tips and Tricks: Powder Instead of Tape and Fan Brush for Blush

Makeup Tips and Tricks: Powder Instead of Tape and Fan Brush for Blush

A huge part of makeup for me is self care and taking the time to do something for myself. I'm not a makeup artist but I really do love watching tutorials and learning more about makeup and makeup techniques. I like trying new techniques and growing as a makeup enthusiast. I thought I would incorporate these techniques into my blog posts to show you what I've been learning and trying.

Powder Instead of Tape

Jaclyn Hill Tutorial Powder Instead of Tape
Video can be seen here

The first technique I've been trying is outlining my eye with powder instead of using tape to get a sharp cat eye shape. Jaclyn Hill does this all the time, and I wanted to try it out. I like to do my face makeup first, it helps me to envision the look I want to come up with and tape usually lifts my foundation/concealer and I don't like to use it. I also like having the outline because it show me where to place the shadow. I didn't have the Morphe brush that Jaclyn has and I went through my collection and found a liner oval brush. This brush works great for stamping the powder. I have also used those square cosmetics sponges and it does a great job. This technique also gives me a very clean look.

Fan Brush for Blush

Often I feel like I come too high on the front of my face with blush because the brushes I use are too big for the shape of my face. It wasn't until I was watching a Wayne Goss video that I discovered using a fan brush to apply blush. He used a very small fan brush which I didn't like when I tried. I like buildable blushes and I felt like I wasn't getting any pigmentation with a thin fan brush. I pickup with a thicker fan brush and fell in love with this technique. It applies my blush exactly where I want it. I rotate between a stiffer natural haired brush for less pigmented brushes and a synthetic brush for more pigmented blushes.

I hope you liked this type of post. I'm trying to add more diversity to my blog and not just have product reviews. I'm brain storming and just having fun.

  2. Great to see you're exploring different makeup techniques! I've never used a fan brush for blush, though i'm not big on blush but i will give that one a go. I did love to use powder for a clean look with eye makeup but I find that it can easily look cakey on my skin so instead use a very little amount of concealer or lighter foundation on a regular concealer brush and create the guideline then set it just a tiny bit of with powder and curl my lashes with a very light coat of mascara to further give me a guide.

  5. The first tip is one I have been using for ages! I love that it does clean up your eyeshadow, but doesn't have such a harsh finish as tape does when it's peeled off. Also, with tape, I find it takes off my foundation underneath, so I'd have to start with my eyeshadow before my base. With the powder, no foundation is removed yay!

  6. Using a fan brush for blush is an interesting thought, so far I only used it for highlighter.

  16. I definitely have to try those two tips! Using powder instead of tape, definitely makes sense. It won't lift up your other makeup. Thanks for sharing.
