January Reading Log Part 1 (The Alice Network, 99 Percent, Trickster Drift)

The Alice Network by Kate Quinn (Source: Personal Copy)

I started the year reading The Alice Network after reading rave reviews. Historical fiction has always been a favorite genre of mine. I wanted to start my reading year out strong, and picked this up. It’s 1947, Charlie St Clair is pregnant and told by her “proper” parents that she “needs to take care of it” because there is no husband around. Charlie uses the overseas trip to breaks free, and discover what really happened to her missing cousin Rose during the war. She has one lead, and shows up on Eve Gardiner’s doorstep. Eve is not the most welcoming,  she has no intention of helping Charlie- until she utters a name that Eve hasn’t heard in decades. Eve turns out to be a former spy during the war. This dual narrative read is truly captivating. 5/5 Stars

99 Percent by Sally Thorne (Releases Feb) (Source Advanced Reader Copy)

I discovered Sally Thorne last year after reading The Hating Game. It was a great read and I was really happy to see a new release from Thorne. I received an advanced copy of 99 Percent and was excited to read it. We meet Darcy has who has traveled the world, and returns home to deal with her inheritance. She must come together with her twin brother to fix and sell the home. Her brother isn’t speaking to her, and she always feels less than her brother. Enter, Tom Veleska her brothers best friend and her lifelong crush who is the contractor on the house. It’s Tom’s first project as a business owner and Darcy decides to help him out while this project is completed. At the same time, she wants to prove to her brother that she can stick around and complete the project. I didn’t like this as much as The Hating Game but it was a quick read that I enjoyed. 3\5 Stars.

Trickster Drift by Eden Robinson (Personal Copy)

Trickster’s Drift is the second book in a trilogy, the first book is Son of a Trickster. I went into this one a little hesitant because it does contain story elements that I don’t normally read but I knew I really enjoyed the first book. The main character Jared is 17, almost a year sober and moving away from home to continue his education. His mother is a witch and absolutely crazy but she does care for her son. Jared seems to be a magnet for magic, and it’s hard to react when you’re the only one who sees this supernatural activity around you. I really enjoyed Jared living with his Aunt and learning more about his family. The indigenous aspects really add to the story as well. I can’t wait to read the third book, as well as Eden Robinson’s other books. 4/5 Stars
