Reminders of Him by Colleen Hoover (Book Review)

eminders of Him by Colleen Hoover (Book Review)

As a reader, I'm sure you've heard of Colleen Hoover. She has a ton of fans and while I do enjoy her books; they've been hit or miss for me. However, Reminders of Him was my absolute favorite Colleen Hoover book I've read so far. I could not put it down, I cried- multiple times and I'm not a crier. This is the book to pick up when you're ready for an emotional read and you have a day to binge a book.

Kenna Rowen has spent the last five years in prison for a tragic accident- a mistake that caused her life to shatter. A mistake that not only hurt her but changed the lives of many. Now she has to pick up the tiny pieces and hope to start over. She has a four-year-old daughter that she has never seen. Born while she was in prison and she was a premie who was taken away immediately after her birth. Kenna has never even seen a picture of her, she only knows her name. She has no parental rights and no visitation. She knows her daughter's grandparents hate her for what she did. She doesn't have much hope, but she returns to the town where it all went wrong. She returns to the town where she knows her daughter is living and she decides that she must rebuild. Second chances are not guaranteed but she'll never know unless she tries.

Kenna's emotions as a mother are real and heartbreaking. She doesn't have much going for; she has no family, no money, and very few opportunities as someone with a criminal record. As soon as people figure out who she is, she knows they will probably turn on her. Colleen Hoover also depicts the complicated feelings of all parties involved in this accident. All feelings are valid, it wasn't just Kenna whose life changed. As a reader, you feel for all the characters and you understand this is very complicated with no easy answers. You start to think "how would I deal with this situation?"

Reading the description, I had a good feeling that I would enjoy this book. Colleen's books are always readable, and emotional and deal with heavy topics. I felt ready to go in, but I was not expecting to be as emotional as I was. This book broke me, I had all the feels and I could not put it down. I had to see how this was going to end. Hurt people, hurt people and it's not easy to get a second chance. Misunderstanding and assumptions were all against Kenna, and no open communication hurt her even more. This is a story of a broken family, grief, and tragedy. I highly recommend this one as I know it will stay with me for many many years to come. I do recommend keeping tissues next to you if you read this one.
