Six Books You Won't Want To Put Down

Six Books You Won't Want To Put Down (Jar of Hearts, The Marrow Thieves, Scarborough, It Ends With Us, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, The Hate You Give)

Jar of Hearts by Jennifer Hillier (Amazon Purchase)

I devoured this book, couldn’t put it down, and rated it 5 stars. A story of three best friends; one goes missing, one thought she got away with murder, and one is now a detective. As teenagers, the most popular girl in school went missing, and no one suspected her best friend. 14 years later, her body is uncovered and the truth starts to come out. Georgia killed her best friend alongside her then-boyfriend Calvin. Calvin fourteen years later is a serial killer and Kaiser is a detective trying to piece together what happened when they were teens.

The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline (Amazon Purchase)

In a futuristic world, global warming has altered the world as we know it. Most people have lost the ability to dream which has led to vast desperation and madness. The Indigenous people have maintained their ability to dream and their marrow is found to cure the dreamless. As a result, residential schools are quickly reinstituted and recruiters are tasked with hunting them down- at all cost. Loss of culture, survival, and resilience are major themes in this book.

Scarborough by Catherine Hernandez (Amazon Purchase) (Full Review)

Scarborough, Ontario - a cultural and economically diverse city; the setting for this debut novel. Hernandez focuses on those in a lower-income bracket and creates a multitude of characters to demonstrate their struggles through various narrations. Readers will follow the stories of children who attend a school’s literacy program and their parents. While the program director is struggling with bureaucracy and the constant fight for these types of programs to continue, readers begin to see the day-to-day lives of these characters and the importance of these programs. This was an eye-opening read and has stayed with me long after I finished the book.

It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover (Amazon Purchase)

If you haven’t read anything by Colleen Hoover- you need to change that. It Ends With Us instantly became a favorite book of mine. “Sometimes the one who loves you is the one who hurts you the most.” This story is heartbreaking, devastating, and thought-provoking. You think the easy answer is to leave in a domestic violent relationship, but this book will really play on your emotions. I think it’s best to go into this book not knowing much about it. When I finished this book, I was happy, I was sad, I was disappointed but I was also satisfied. Lily is an amazing character, you will be hooked on this book. When you’re done, you’ll feel like you left a best friend behind.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid (Amazon Purchase)

This book has been on so many "best of" lists and there’s a reason for it. This was a book I wanted to be able to pause time and allow me to just sit and read. Taylor Jenkins Reid is one of my favorite authors, but this book still blew me away. Evelyn Hugo led a scandalous and glamorous life. As she grew older she largely stayed away from the media, When she has no one left, she summons an unknown journalist named Monique to write her biography. Evelyn started out with very little money,  she came from nothing but her determination and drive led her to the top of Hollywood. Along the way, she had seven husbands and as each story unfolds, you’ll be glued to the pages.

The Hate You Give by Angie Thomas (Amazon Purchase)

I don’t think you could have not heard about this book, but if you haven’t- you should read it. While this is a Young Adult read, it’s a great read. Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement and police brutality, this is an important read. If you don’t read Young Adult books- don’t brush this one aside. Starr Carter lives in two worlds, the poorer neighborhood she lives in and the fancy prep school that she attends. When Starr witnesses the death of her childhood best friend at the hands of the police, her world is forever changed. Khalil was unarmed and she can confirm it because she was sitting in the car with him when he was pulled over.

  1. Jar of Hearts sounds fabulous. And I've only read one book by Taylor Jenkins Reid but I really liked it. It sounds like she gets better and better with each book.

  4. I know quite a few middle class people who live in Scarborough, so it must be both a culturally and economically diverse area
